Periodic housekeeping will
ensure your PC performs at its maximum capability. The following
procedures should be regularly performed on your PC (Windows
98/ME/2000/XP). Be sure to read the NOTES
below. Use the Download & Update Links
to get free tools to prevent, detect & remove unwanted, undesirable & harmful

Remove unused, unneeded & undesirable programs with the Add/Remove Programs function
in the control panel,
- Check for unwanted program startups with msconfig & uncheck identifiable unnecessary, unwanted or
suspicious programs to prevent startup when the PC is rebooted,
- Start / run /
type "msconfig" / click startup tab,

Review your firewall program filtering & activity; check the
integrity of the firewall exceptions list,
- Reboot your computer,
- Start / turn off computer / restart,

- Update Microsoft Software,
- Perform a Disk Cleanup in Win98 and newer or clear windows temporary files (in C:/temp, C:/windows/temp & all
*.tmp) manually,
- Go to My Computer, right-click C
drive, select properties,
- Clear your browser program's (Internet Explorer,
Netscape, etc.)
temporary internet files (cache, history, location bar, cookies, etc.)
- Tools / options in your browser program,

- Delete Old Email Messages from the Inbox & Sent
Items folders
& Empty Deleted Items Folder,

Empty Recycle Bin,

- Clear Recent Documents,
- Right-click task bar / properties,
- Clear My Documents files or move them to subfolders in a
"data" folder on your hard drive,

Reboot your computer
- Start / turn off computer / restart,
- Update Ad-Aware & use to scan for adware & spyware,

Anti-Spyware,
- Update Microsoft Defender & use to scan for adware,
spyware & browser hijackers, Microsoft
Defender Anti-Spyware,
- Update AVG Anti-Spyware & use to scan for adware &
spyware, AVG
Anti-Spyware,
- Update AVG Root-kit & use to scan for trojan-like
programs, AVG
Anti-Rootkit,
- Update AVG anti-virus & use to scan for viruses,
trojans & worms, AVG
Anti-Virus,
- Run Disk Scan in safe mode to check the physical condition
of the disk drive,
- My Computer, right-click C drive,
select properties, tools,
- Run Disk Defrag in safe mode to re-organize fragmented files,
- My Computer, right-click C drive,
select properties, tools,
- Note: Switch to Safe Mode
before performing scans listed above to minimize extraneous computer
activity & disable other processes from interfering with the scans.
- Start / turn off computer / restart then F8
repeatedly as computer reboots & select safe
mode,

Reboot your computer,
- Start / turn off computer / restart,
- Backup your Data Files & Folders to CD or DVD.

NOTES: The software designated
in these procedures are examples. Actual software used may vary. In
addition some software may be set to apply updates automatically & be proactive
in preventing malware from residing on your computer. Steps highlighted in
pink should be performed
every 1 - 7 days. Steps highlighted in yellow
should be performed every 1 - 4 weeks.
